Ian Wright couldn’t understand why Jarrad Branthwaite didn’t get a chance in the latest England matches.
The Arsenal legend took to X to express his puzzlement over the Everton defender’s absence from the pitch. Gareth Southgate’s inclusion of the 21-year-old in the squad appeared to be a sign he was considering other central defenders ahead of the European Championships.
Branthwaite has been one of the standout defenders since he returned to the Toffees from a loan spell at PSV Eindhoven in the summer. As one of the few left-footed central defenders in England’s ranks, many thought he would be an ideal option for the Three Lions.

Via the Liverpool Echo, Wright asked: “How did Jarrad Branthwaite get zero minutes across the two friendlies? Doesn’t make sense. Perfect opportunity to have a look at him.”
Branthwaite had received his first call-up to England’s senior squad for the international friendlies against Brazil and Belgium. But he didn’t get his first senior cap and remained on the bench for both games, despite the lack of left-footed defenders and the injuries to John Stones and Kyle Walker.
During these games, the Three Lions lost 1-0 and then drew 2-2. Branthwaite has established himself alongside James Tarkowski in the heart of Everton’s defence this season.
He has even netted twice in 25 appearances. Moreover, he won the KNVB Cup final against Ajax and took part in 27 games for the PSV. Liverpool’s Joe Gomez was chosen over the former Carlisle United youngster to step onto the field for both of England’s games during the international break.
Branthwaite was the only defensive substitute who didn’t get called upon during the loss to Brazil on Saturday. Lewis Dunk was picked to play instead of Branthwaite in the match against Belgium on Tuesday night.
However, the Brighton and Hove Albion player couldn’t handle a high ball, which let ex-Everton forward Romelu Lukaku set up Youri Tielemans for his second goal of the evening.
A last-minute goal from Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham made sure Southgate’s team managed to grab a draw.
