Emma Raducanu’s Ranking May Be Falling, But Her Tennis Story Isn’t Over Yet

Emma Raducanu’s latest ranking situation has once again placed her career under the spotlight, but simply looking at the number beside her name does not tell the whole story.

The former US Open champion is currently ranked No. 100 in the world, according to the latest WTA rankings. That is a dramatic change from earlier this year, when she climbed as high as No. 23.

On paper, it looks like another worrying chapter. But the circumstances behind the slide are important.

Raducanu has not been steadily losing tournament after tournament. Instead, her season was interrupted by a stress fracture in her lower leg, forcing her to miss major portions of the calendar, including Wimbledon and the US Open. She has also withdrawn from the China Open as she continues working toward a return.

That makes her ranking decline particularly frustrating.

Earlier in 2026, Raducanu showed signs that she was moving in a positive direction. She reached a WTA 250 final in Cluj-Napoca and later produced an impressive run at Queen’s Club, where she reached the final of a WTA 500 event. Her run at Queen’s included several convincing victories and helped push her ranking back toward the upper part of the Top 40.

Then injury changed everything.

The ranking system cannot measure whether a player is injured, improving physically, rebuilding confidence or simply unable to compete. It only counts the points available from tournaments. As Raducanu remained away from competition, her ranking naturally continued to slide.

That is why the current number can be misleading.

Raducanu is still only 23, and her career has already included an extraordinary rise, a Grand Slam triumph and several difficult periods involving injuries and changes in momentum. The challenge now is not necessarily proving that she can become the player she was in 2021. It is discovering how good she can become when she finally gets a sustained period of health and competition.

Falling outside the Top 100 would undoubtedly create practical challenges, but it would not erase her talent or her previous progress.

In fact, the most encouraging part of her 2026 season may be what happened before the injury. She reached two finals and climbed as high as No. 23, showing that she could still compete successfully at a high level.

So while the ranking number may grab attention, it should not become the entire story.

Emma Raducanu’s ranking may be falling, but her career is still being written. The real question is what happens when she finally gets the chance to stay healthy and play consistently again.
