Coco Gauff’s 2026 US Open campaign may have ended with disappointment, but the American star has already given fans plenty of reasons to keep watching.
The 22-year-old arrived in New York determined to make another deep run, and she delivered some unforgettable moments along the way. After progressing through the early rounds, Gauff defeated fellow American Iva Jovic to reach the quarterfinals. She then produced one of the most dramatic comebacks of her tournament against Mirra Andreeva.
Gauff dropped the opening set and found herself in serious trouble during the second-set tiebreak. She eventually saved two match points before turning the match around and winning 2-6, 7-6(7), 6-2. The victory sent her into her first US Open semifinal since winning the tournament in 2023.
Then came Elena Rybakina.
Gauff won the opening set 6-3, putting herself in position to reach another US Open final. Rybakina responded strongly, however, taking the next two sets 6-4, 6-4 to end Gauff’s run.
Despite the disappointment, Gauff has already made it clear that she is looking forward rather than dwelling on the result. Her next major opportunity comes with the China Open, while another fascinating development has emerged away from the traditional WTA spotlight.
Gauff is set to become a player-owner of the Florida franchise in the new World Team Tennis season, which begins in December. Her teammates are expected to include Tommy Paul, Learner Tien, Iva Jovic, Brandon Nakashima and Eva Lys.
There has also been attention on Gauff’s connection with Atlanta. Recent reports say she has supported efforts to renovate community tennis and basketball courts and improve recreational opportunities for young people.
