MusaReport: Celtics Could Shake Up Roster Unless They Win 2024 Championship
The Boston Celtics are one step closer to securing back-to-back titles after eliminating the Orlando Magic in just five games. Despite making the playoffs for 11 consecutive seasons, it took years for the franchise to assemble the right championship-caliber roster. However, this core may not stay intact much longer—unless they hoist the trophy again in June.
With a massive payroll looming, the Celtics risk exceeding $500 million in total roster costs next season unless they reduce spending. For months, rumors have swirled about potential roster changes, but NBA insider Jake Fischer recently revealed that nearly every player—aside from Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown—could be on the trade block if Boston falls short of a title.
“If they don’t win it all, at least one starter-level player is likely gone,” Fischer said. “There will also be discussions about role players like Sam Hauser and Payton Pritchard. Outside of Tatum and Brown, virtually everyone could be part of preliminary trade talks.”
The financial stakes are sky-high. If the Celtics remain above the second salary cap apron for more than two years in a five-year span, they’ll face harsh penalties, including losing the ability to trade a future first-round pick and combine salaries in deals. Under new owner Bill Chisholm, the team is bracing for a major roster dilemma, with a potential $500 million payroll—the highest in NBA history.
However, a championship could change everything. Fischer noted that if Boston wins, league insiders—including team personnel and cap experts—expect the Celtics to keep the core intact and chase a three-peat.
Next season, the team will have five players earning over $25 million, with Tatum and Brown each making more than $50 million (per Spotrac). The coming months will determine whether this expensive but dominant roster gets another shot—or undergoes a major overhaul.
