JUST IN: “We decide to sell him because” Ten Hag drops BOMSHELL reason on late stunning Wan Bissaka West Ham switch decision.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka joined West Ham last month from Manchester United in a move that left Hammers fans thrilled. His performances have been outstanding so far, and it’s surprising that West Ham had little competition in securing his signature.
Interestingly, before Julen Lopetegui brought the 26-year-old to London, the manager initially targeted Noussair Mazraoui, who instead joined Manchester United. While the Moroccan has made a solid start at Old Trafford, Wan-Bissaka has been exceptional for West Ham.
Perhaps it’s biased, but I genuinely feel West Ham got the better end of the deal between the two clubs.
Now, a surprising reason has surfaced for why Manchester United decided to sell Wan-Bissaka to West Ham.
### Why Manchester United Sold Aaron Wan-Bissaka to West Ham
Many Hammers supporters were shocked at their ability to sign the former Crystal Palace defender, as he is easily capable of playing for a top-four side. His quality has already been evident at West Ham.
So, why did Manchester United let him go?
According to ESPN, the sale was financially driven. “Sources have told ESPN that analysis revealed there wasn’t much between Wan-Bissaka and Mazraoui, but replacing one with the other made broad financial sense.”
United paid £13 million upfront for Mazraoui, with the deal potentially rising to £17 million with add-ons (according to Fabrizio Romano). West Ham, on the other hand, paid £15 million upfront for Wan-Bissaka (BBC).
The key difference seems to be the structure of the payments, with Manchester United spreading the cost of Mazraoui over three instalments, while West Ham paid the full amount for Wan-Bissaka upfront. Additionally, Premier League sustainability rules (PSR) consider only upfront fees and not potential add-ons.
While the deal may have made financial sense for United, I still believe West Ham came out ahead with the acquisition of Wan-Bissaka compared to United’s move for Mazraoui.
