SHAMBOLIC: One of historic day not to been forgotten by the BLACK CATS fans revealing how the Canaries feast on the wearsiders.
Following a disappointing loss to the unexpected champions Leicester City on opening day, expectations were high for Dick Advocaat’s team to improve their performance and address the previous week’s shortcomings.
The team’s main challenges were their ineffective defense, apparent lack of fitness, vulnerability to opponent attacks, and overall careless play.
Offensively, the team appeared directionless. Jermain Defoe was often isolated or surrounded by underperforming teammates like Steven Fletcher or seemingly disinterested players like Jeremain Lens.
From the start, Alex Neil’s Norwich dominated the match. Robbie Brady, an Irish international, consistently outplayed Billy Jones at right back, raising questions about Jones’ capabilities.
Brady’s frequent crosses caused chaos in the box, and Norwich’s first goal came from his quick corner play.
As had been common in recent years, an early opposition goal increased tension among the home crowd, where patience was wearing thin.
Martin’s goal boosted Norwich’s confidence and gameplay, while Sunderland became visibly uncomfortable after conceding.
Norwich maintained control, with their midfield easily outperforming Sunderland’s. Lee Cattermole, not for the first time, seemed particularly off his game.
The second Norwich goal resulted from a straightforward play, with fullback Steven Whittaker advancing unchallenged against Sunderland’s defense.
Given Sunderland’s poor form and lack of fight, this effectively ended the match as a competitive event, with Norwich in full control.
Ironically, while Advocaat sought to score by substituting Danny Graham for Seb Larsson at halftime, it was Norwich who scored again. Nathan Redmond capitalized on poor defending by Patrick Van Aanholt and Cattermole, beating Pantilimon at his near post.
Despite Duncan Watmore scoring on his Sunderland debut, it was another disastrous day for the team, who already appeared to be in serious trouble.
Post-match, Advocaat emphasized the need for immediate improvement from everyone at the club.
Despite new signings before the transfer window closed, results didn’t significantly improve until Advocaat left his position.
Sam Allardyce took over after Advocaat resigned following a 2-2 draw with West Ham United. Under the experienced Allardyce, the team slowly began to show signs of improvement.
