Sunderland’s Striker Search Continues

As the new season approaches, Sunderland finds itself in urgent need of a striker. The club has struggled to replace Ross Stewart since his departure to Southampton, leaving a significant void in their attacking lineup.

While the Black Cats have been linked with several players, including SM Caen’s Alexandre Mendy and Ike Ugbo (who’s now set to join Sheffield Wednesday), no deals have materialized. The Mendy transfer remains in limbo due to a takeover at Caen.

Given these setbacks, Sunderland must explore other options. Here are three alternative striker targets the club should consider:

1. Sekou Mara – Southampton
At 22, Mara showed promise in the Championship last season, scoring seven goals in ten games. With a track record in Ligue 1 and potential limited Premier League playing time, a loan to Sunderland could benefit both parties. The club’s French contingent could help Mara settle quickly.

2. Romano Postema – Groningen
Despite recently signing a long-term contract with Eredivisie newcomers Groningen, Postema’s prolific season (21 goals and four assists in 40 games) makes him an attractive prospect. At 22, he represents both an immediate and long-term investment. While unproven at the top level, his goal-scoring record in a competitive league is promising.

3. Ricky-Jade Jones – Peterborough United
Jones has shown significant development recently, overcoming early challenges to score 12 goals with five assists last season. His versatility allows him to play wide or centrally, and his electric pace could trouble defenses at any level. At a young age, Jones has the potential to become a star for Sunderland.

These alternatives offer Sunderland different profiles of strikers, each with the potential to address the club’s current attacking needs while also providing long-term value.
