‘under pressure’ Newcastle reportedly inform will have to sell assets in order to avoid punishment as FFP take charge with deadline issued on to the MAGPIES.
According to a report from Sky Sports on Thursday, Newcastle United is among six Premier League clubs facing pressure to offload key players before June 30th in order to comply with the league’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR). The other clubs mentioned are Everton, Nottingham Forest, Chelsea, Aston Villa, and newly-promoted Leicester City.
The PSR mandates that clubs limit their losses to £105 million over a three-year period. With the calculation deadline set for June 30th, clubs needing to reduce losses must sell assets to avoid potential penalties. Sky Sports referred to this date as a “mini transfer deadline day” for these clubs.
Although Sky Sports has since removed the report from their social media channels, and Newcastle United has not officially commented on it, head coach Eddie Howe had previously indicated that the club may need to offload players during the upcoming summer transfer window, which opens on June 14th.
Both Everton and Nottingham Forest faced points deductions during the 2023-24 season for breaching the PSR, suggesting that Newcastle and the other mentioned clubs might have to part ways with at least one key player to comply with the financial regulations.
It is understood that Newcastle is not considering selling their top assets like Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes, despite transfer interest in them. However, Guimaraes’ £100 million release clause poses a potential risk, as its activation before the June 30th deadline could compel the club to sell him.
