MATCH POINT: Taylor Fritz into Miami Open round of 16 over Denis Shapovalov

Taylor Fritz continued his impressive run at the 2025 Miami Open by defeating Denis Shapovalov 7-5, 6-3 in the third round, securing his spot in the round of 16. The match, held on March 24 at the Grandstand court, showcased Fritz’s resilience and strategic play against the Canadian opponent.

In the first set, Fritz established an early lead, but Shapovalov fought back, breaking Fritz’s serve to level the score at 5-5. However, Fritz capitalized on Shapovalov’s errors, including a crucial double fault, to break serve again and take the set 7-5.

The second set saw Fritz maintain his momentum, breaking Shapovalov’s serve early and holding his own service games with confidence. He secured the set 6-3, closing out the match in straight sets.

Statistically, Fritz’s performance was solid, winning 84% of points on his first serve and converting 75% of his break point opportunities. In contrast, Shapovalov struggled with consistency, converting only 25% of his break points.

This victory marked Fritz’s third win over Shapovalov in their last four encounters, narrowing their head-to-head record. Fritz’s advancement to the round of 16 reflects his strong form and determination to excel in the tournament.

Looking ahead, Fritz is set to face Adam Walton in the next round, aiming to continue his pursuit of the Miami Open title.
