Mundle? “This player won it for the Black Cats” Pundit reveal Le Bris brilliant decision of including underrated Sunderland Player to starting XI was the Game changer over Luton’s victory.
Sunderland claimed the top spot in the Championship after goals from Chris Rigg and Romaine Mundle secured another impressive victory, maintaining their excellent start to the season.
The wingers each found the net, either side of Elijah Adebayo’s first goal for Luton since May. The win put Regis Le Bris’s Black Cats ahead of Leeds, who had briefly drawn level the previous day.
It was a tough loss for Luton, who had hoped their poor start to the Championship campaign was behind them after a dominant win over local rivals Watford on Saturday.
Sunderland began strongly, with Luton goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski called into action just 60 seconds in to deny Dan Neil, set up by Alan Browne’s clever play. Browne returned moments later with a backheel that Kaminski saved after Mundle wreaked havoc down the opposite wing.
Luton gradually gained control, responding with a turning shot from Carlton Morris, delivered by Victor Moses, that narrowly missed the target. Jobe Bellingham saw a deflected effort go wide, while a series of Luton corners forced Sunderland keeper Anthony Patterson to make a crucial save from Mark McGuinness’s header.
One corner clipped the top of Sunderland’s bar before 17-year-old Rigg was booked for a foul on Alfie Doughty, Luton’s set-piece specialist. Morris thought he had given Luton the lead just before halftime, but his goal was ruled out for offside, with Jordan Clark deemed too close to the play.
In the 55th minute, Rigg broke through to put Sunderland ahead, keeping his composure in the box to slide the ball under Kaminski after intercepting a misplaced backpass by Tahith Chong.
Luton’s response came just eight minutes later, with Adebayo scoring his first goal of the season. However, Chong’s claim that he was fouled went unanswered, and Mundle sealed Sunderland’s victory by finishing off a quick counterattack with a low shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box, extending Le Bris’s remarkable start in the North East.
