JUST IN: Regis Le Bris gives clear Opinion of Injury Progress of undisputed Duo whose absence raised eye brows against Hull City.
Without the duo, Sunderland managed to perform well enough against Hull City on Sunday, securing a 1-0 victory. The lone goal, scored by Wilson Isidor, came under somewhat controversial circumstances.
Despite maintaining their position at the top of the Championship, the win did not widen the gap between Sunderland and the teams below, though some shifted places in the standings.
Sunderland had eight first-team players unavailable due to injury. While most had been sidelined long-term, Dan Ballard and Eliezer Mayenda were closer to returning to the lineup.
Ballard and Mayenda were recovering from ankle and muscle injuries, respectively, but the club ultimately decided they weren’t ready for the Hull match.
There was hope that they might be fit for Sunderland’s midweek game against Luton Town, who just secured a 3-0 win over rivals Watford. Although Luton had a slow start to the season, they should not be underestimated. Having Ballard and Mayenda available would provide a boost for Sunderland ahead of the match. However, their availability remains uncertain.
Regis Le Bris provides an update on Dan Ballard and Eliezer Mayenda’s fitness
Le Bris left Sunderland fans in suspense, offering no clear answer regarding Ballard and Mayenda’s readiness for Wednesday’s game. Speaking at a press conference before their trip to Kenilworth Road, he mentioned that their return remains a possibility, according to the Sunderland Echo.
He said: “We will have to see with these two players. It’s possible they could be back to play some part this week, but we need to assess their condition further before making a decision.”
Le Bris also stated that the other long-term injured players are still not close to returning, with most expected back after the November international break.
Sunderland’s recruitment has been key during this period
The absence of key players like Ballard and Mayenda could have seriously impacted Sunderland, but their squad depth has mitigated the blow. Fortunately, missing an international defender and an in-form forward hasn’t caused significant issues.
Summer signings Chris Mepham and Isidor have stepped up in their absence, while January recruit Romaine Mundle has emerged as a key player, compensating for Ian Poveda’s underwhelming start since his arrival in July.
Sunderland’s effective approach to squad building has allowed them to navigate these injury setbacks, and credit must be given to the club’s hierarchy for their successful planning.
