Gary Neville backs win-win West Ham transfer after explaining why Kalvin Phillips was ‘fish out of water’ at Man City despite Etihad stadium return.
Gary Neville believes Kalvin Phillips will have a better chance at regular playing time with West Ham than he did at Manchester City after leaving Leeds United in 2022. Phillips struggled to secure starts under Pep Guardiola, leading City to agree on a loan move to West Ham.
Reports vary on whether West Ham will have an option to buy Phillips at the end of the season, but recent indications suggest they will. If all goes well, West Ham could be where Phillips finds stability.
Neville predicts that Phillips’ playing time will increase significantly. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said, “He needs to play football, that’s for sure. We remember him as a key player for England, and we thought he’d do well at City. They rarely make mistakes in the transfer market, but it hasn’t worked out for him there. With West Ham losing Declan Rice, this move is a win-win for both the club and Kalvin Phillips.”
West Ham bolstered their midfield by signing Edson Alvarez and James Ward-Prowse after Rice’s departure to Arsenal, but Neville believes Phillips could establish himself alongside Tomas Soucek in midfield.
“He’ll likely play next to Soucek, allowing him to push forward while Phillips holds back. He’s a solid passer with experience,” Neville added. “Manchester City’s style is unique, and if you’re not as quick on the ball as players like Rodri, Bernardo Silva, or Kevin De Bruyne, it can make you seem out of place. That was the case for Phillips at City, but he’ll fit in at West Ham without issue. He’s a great player and a perfect fit for David Moyes’ style.”
Neville also sees Phillips’ move benefiting the England national team. Phillips played a key role for England alongside Rice during the last European Championship, but his limited game time at City may affect his chances for the upcoming Euros. However, a successful stint at West Ham could boost his standing with the national team.
Neville thinks Phillips’ desire to play in the Euros likely influenced his decision to leave City despite being under contract until 2028. “His main goal will be to get playing time ahead of the Euros. It’s important for England and for Phillips,” Neville said. “Gareth Southgate trusts certain players, and England doesn’t have an abundance of midfield options. This move could benefit everyone, including the national team.”
