Bayern Munich entered the summer transfer window with a clear priority: signing a midfielder. The team had struggled in the midfield last season, particularly in away matches. To address this, Bayern secured Joao Palhinha from Fulham. However, they also had their eye on another English-based midfielder.

In an interview on the Square Ball Podcast (via iMiaSanMia), Leeds United CEO Angus Kinnear revealed that both Bayern Munich and Real Madrid had expressed interest in Archie Gray. The 18-year-old had an impressive season with Leeds, attracting attention from multiple European clubs.

Gray ultimately chose to join Tottenham Hotspur over the summer for a reported fee nearing £40 million. Brentford also showed strong interest, but Gray favored a move to Spurs. Kinnear believes that Gray could eventually play for a top club like Bayern or Real Madrid.

Gray, known for his versatility, can play in various positions across midfield and defense. He is athletic, highly intelligent for his age, and capable of playing as a central or defensive midfielder, as well as a full-back. Bayern is likely to monitor his progress at Tottenham closely.

Looking ahead, Bayern will need young midfielders next summer
Bayern had planned significant changes to their squad this summer, but not everything went according to plan. The midfield could have been notably strengthened if Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka had left, as the club was open to selling them. However, neither player pushed for a departure.

Young midfielders like Gray could be ideal targets for Bayern in future transfer windows. However, pursuing Gray may prove difficult due to the high transfer fee Spurs would demand. Bayern already faced challenging negotiations with Tottenham when they signed Harry Kane in 2023. As a result, Bayern will likely seek more affordable midfield options for their rebuild next summer.
