“The best of all” Pundit reveal Nottingham Forest most important Deadline day Done Deal that has been on Marinakis chase telling fans to expect nothing less from this GEM.
Nottingham Forest’s first deadline day signing may have been somewhat overshadowed by their second, but defender Morato is still expected to make a significant impact at the City Ground.
James Ward-Prowse grabbed most of the attention as the summer transfer window closed, with the midfielder joining on loan from West Ham United, a familiar name for Reds fans. However, Morato, who was brought in for €11 million (£9m) from Benfica, has the potential to be an important addition to the squad. Forest had been monitoring him for a few windows, hoping he can have a similar influence to his fellow Brazilian, Murillo.
Before joining Forest, Morato was linked with Inter Milan, Tottenham Hotspur, and Fulham. Despite stiff competition at Benfica, his abilities as a dominant aerial defender with a strong left-footed pass have been praised. Vitor Rodrigues, a Portuguese journalist, believes his value will continue to rise. Although Morato has room to grow and could take some time to adapt, his versatility and defensive qualities make him an intriguing prospect for Forest.
Known fully as Felipe Rodrigues da Silva, Morato started his career in São Paulo before moving to Benfica in 2019. Despite waiting until 2021 for his Portuguese league debut, he developed significantly, making over 80 appearances, gaining Champions League experience, and helping Benfica win the 2023 Primeira Liga title.
Morato’s ability to play both centre-back and left-back suits Nuno Espirito Santo’s preference for versatile players. However, reports suggest that under Benfica manager Roger Schmidt, he was often played at left-back, a position unfamiliar to him. Despite solid defensive performances, Morato’s discomfort in the role was evident, and he’s much better suited as a central defender.
Patience may be key for Morato at Forest, as Murillo and Nikola Milenkovic are likely to start in a four-man defense. Nonetheless, with Nuno potentially reverting to a three-man defense, Morato will be valuable for squad depth. He has signed a five-year contract, giving him ample time to adjust and contribute.
Benfica will retain 15 percent of any future sale value, and Morato, known for his professionalism and winning mentality, is determined to make the most of his opportunity. He’s already voiced his commitment to helping the team and is optimistic about winning trophies with the club.
Leaving Benfica wasn’t an easy decision, but Morato felt it was the right time to step up his career and test himself in the Premier League, a league he has admired since childhood. Forest’s hiring of former Benfica scout Pedro Ferreira likely helped smooth the move, and the presence of fellow Brazilians Murillo, Danilo, and Carlos Miguel at the club played a role in his decision.
Although quiet and focused, Morato is determined to seize the chance to prove himself. He received a warm welcome from the City Ground fans when introduced before the Wolves game, and he’s eager to repay their support when he gets his opportunity.
“I’m honoured to play for such a historic club in the best league in the world,” Morato said. “As professionals, we must always take steps forward, and competing here is a dream come true.”
