Sunderland’s Striker Search Continues as Transfer Window Winds Down

Kristjaan Speakman, Sunderland’s sporting director, has yet to secure a new striker despite having multiple transfer windows to address the issue. With only two weeks remaining in the summer transfer window, the Black Cats are still without a new forward.

Alexandre Mendy of Caen has been a primary target for Sunderland throughout the summer. Although Mendy is keen to leave after scoring 22 goals in Ligue 2 last season, negotiations between the clubs have stalled over the price. Sunderland hopes Mendy will push for an exit to reduce his asking price to around £2.5 million.

As the August 30th deadline approaches, Speakman may need to consider alternatives. One potential option is Sory Kaba from Las Palmas. The 29-year-old Guinean striker impressed during a loan spell at Cardiff City last season, scoring eight goals in 17 Championship appearances.

Kaba joined Las Palmas last summer but struggled in La Liga, scoring just once in 17 matches. The Spanish club is now looking to offload him. Previously linked with Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United, Kaba could be available for around £1.3 million.

Kaba’s physical presence and ability to lead the line could make him a suitable alternative to Mendy, fitting well with manager Regis Le Bris’ apparent preference for a lone striker system. While Kaba lacks Mendy’s recent goal-scoring record, his Championship experience and lower price tag could make him an attractive option for Sunderland if the Mendy deal falls through.
